Communication

Conflict Resolution

Effective communication is essential to maintaining a respectful, collaborative, and drama-free workplace. Too often, individuals listen with the intent to respond rather than to understand. Practicing active listening and intentional communication, grounded in transparency, empathy, and self-awareness, helps foster trust and minimize conflict.

  • Tips for success: Address conflict directly and respectfully with the individuals involved; listen to understand rather than to react; remain open and appreciative of feedback; set boundaries by politely declining to engage in venting or gossip; express concerns honestly and constructively; encourage others to communicate directly with the source of conflict; build connections with colleagues through positive, non-gossip-based interactions; recognize and release issues that are not yours to carry; address inconsistency or “flip-flopping” with clarity; approach conflict calmly, kindly, candidly, and promptly, and actively acknowledge and reinforce positive behaviors.

  • Words Matter: Effective communication requires meeting individuals where they are. Avoid overly technical shelter or veterinary jargon, and instead use clear, accessible language to ensure understanding across diverse audiences.

  • Body Language: Because a significant portion of communication is nonverbal, it is important to be mindful of body language. Demonstrate openness and compassion through relaxed posture, softened shoulders, a calm facial expression, and a steady, respectful tone of voice.
